Hi fellow VR Enthusiasts.
For those who like Real Life STories, and VR, then grab some Popcorn! This is a VR spies Exclusive for the Solo Developer of CDF STarfighter VR and Reficul!
It is not often I post anything as being a solo dev my 5th game seems to take that away from me. After 5 Years of 100 hours a week I am now retiring. I am going back to commercial art and design and will be working on realtime Sci-fi scenes for film and Promo VR. I think this is the right time to let a Real VR story get out there!
To cut a long story short, I have released a new and unique survival horror game for Oculus Rift and Touch. As my last Solo Dev game "CDF Starfighter" was refused from Oculus Early Access for no reason at least they gave me the reason why "Reficul" was refused. 4 times :
Your app's metadata claims support for Oculus Touch, but we were not able to complete testing with this input device.
"If items can be dropped on the floor, distance grabbing is required. Oculus sensors are placed on the desk of the user, and often loses tracking when the user reaches down to interact with objects on the floor."
So I explained that distance grabbing was not really an option as small items such as rounds to be placed in a magazine (realistic weapon handling) and many other things would cause major problems.
The only reply I got was "" nothing, just a store submission failure saying the same thing.
Luck for me the HTC-Vive I also supported, but as my dev kit has never worked properly when o got in March 2016, I am still waiting for a replacement to get the final vive issues squared away. As with CDF Starfighter, the game is designed for VR and luckily my CDF Starfighter Game released as a HTC-Vive Launch Title - Early Access and my solo-dev game was pitched against the giants of space combat - Most Had Million plus funding, Mine failed 25 k on Kickstarter in November 2015 - for One Guy!
I used all my own ships, my design and everything which takes a lot of time. Same as Ghostship, they said they were stolen assets or assumed it was a AAA game and denounced my years of Hard Work. I am one guy, And with my last game Ghostship Getting compared to Dead Space and Doom, the 2 biggest classics of the Genre.
Well, here I can get the word out about what I achieved in 5 years by myself and hope my new awesome Built for VR and Motion Controller game as well as my 4 other Solo games in 5 years. I am now going back to 3d design and consultancy and with my 12k of VR experience over the last 4 years will also be offering VR consultation and pipeline planning, especially for the Unreal engine which I have used for thousands of hours in every part of development.
I have spent the last few weeks preparing some of my older unreleased models, concepts, and assets and will be working on some all new ones over the coming months.
Reficul is in Early access and the remaining 6 months will be spent cleaning up and polishing the game with community feedback over the coming months. But my main priority is now my family and 3 young children who could have had much more if I carried on with my previous career and had not worked for nothing over the last half decade. So that is now my focus along with perfecting and finalizing Reficul for full release next year around March/April, Obviously not on oculus Store.
As a solo dev I still need help to make my games as good as they are, and certain people have helped and many voice actors, music guys and much more have all chipped in along the way. They all deserve a huge mention and can be found in each of my Games Credits Section!!
If I did not, then 4 thousand people would not have been able to play my game in VR and huge thanks in most knowing about my game was down to all the cool guys here at VR Spies who helped to get the word out while every other site which even covered ideas and kickstarters would not cover my game even after it finished Early access 1 year later and 40 + updates during Early Access!
I have Released Reficul On Steam VR - Early Access :
Unusually, we have had almost zero promotion and replies to our e-mails for coverage etc. After Making CDF Starfighter VR by myself with no funding, I went alone and funded the game myself and hoped it may get some attention as it was not derived from a failed Kickstarter - the same as my 2 previous VR games. Again huge Thanks to Don and Ca and Chary who played our VR game and helped get the word out there.
As I am just a solo developer and I rarely use Reddit, I have posted a comment on The Oculus forums which I hope you will check out and vote up the post to help me get the word out. I have worked hard to make a unique survival horror with lots of gameplay and Atmosphere which only a handful of people know about.
